The Camp Team

Camp Directors

John and Julie Laubacher have four grown children who have come up through the Awana program (and three grandchildren in Awana!). They have both served as directors in their local club and have served 18 and 21 years, respectively, at Mountain High Scholarship Camp and Summit Leadership Camp in capacities including head counselors, teachers and cabin counselors. They have witnessed how this camping experience can change and challenge campers in their walk with Christ and they are passionate about helping campers discover their greatest spiritual potential. This is their tenth year in helping organize camp.

Worship Leader

We are excited to announce the return of Rick Tener to camp as our Worship Leader and music coordinator. Rick makes a huge effort to provide quality worship and singing to our camp in the chapel and dining hall or anywhere else on campus for the fun of it! He brings his multi-years of experience as worship leader for former Awana Camps at Big Bear to us. You can count on him to bring the best out of the campers in both their worship and devotion to Christ. He might even find time to assemble a Talent Show that features both campers and staff!

Evening Speaker

Steve Mathis has served in Awana Clubs since 1998. His four children are all active participants in Awana from Sparks to Journey. Over the years, Steve has served as Junior High Youth Pastor, as an Elder; and has led evangelism training, short term missions and worship. However, Steve's passion is teaching the word of God. Steve has served in previous years as bible teacher and Evening keynote speaker for Central Coast Encounter, and we are excited to have him back again this year as the High School Keynote Speaker for the evening chapel.

Game Director

Games are an exciting and fun part of camp and Eric Van Earden has been the Game Director for the past 5 years at CCEncounter. Eric has been involved in Awana for 27 years from Sparks, Pals & Pioneers now serving as the Trek Director. The competition at camp is fun and fierce and Eric makes sure that everyone is included and has a great time during our camp activities. Eric has a passion for kids and wants them to know that following Jesus is not boring, but a fun and exciting experience.
